Legal Key Terms
Suit : When a person or organisation take a complaint to the Court in order to obtain decisions.
Plaint : A legal document which contains an accusations or charge.
Plaintiff : A person who brings a case against another in a court of law.
Defendant : The person against whom the action is brought, by the plaintiff.
Appellant : A person who applies to a higher court for a reversal of the decision of a lower court.
Respondent : a party against whom a petition is filed, especially one in an appeal or a divorce case.
Offence : An illegal act.
Charge : An accusation.
Complaints : Any allegations made orally or in writing to a magistrate.
Claim : To demand for something that is due e.g. money.
Claimant : A person making a claim, especially in a lawsuit or for a state benefit.
Decree : Formal expression of an adjudication which conclusively determine the right of the parties to the suit in regard to to all or any of the matter in the controversy.
Decree-holder : A person in whose favour a decree has been passed.
Judgement : The statement given by the judge on the grounds of a decree or order.
Judgement-debtor : Any person against whom a decree has been passed.
Order : The formal expression of any decision of a Civil Court which is not a decree.
Accused : A person or group of people who are charged with or on trial for a crime.
Victim : A person who has suffered any loss or injury caused by reason of the act or omission for which the accused person has been charged and the expression victim includes his or her guardian or legal heir.
Witness : A person who sees an event, typically a crime or accident, take place.
